What to Know Before Hiring a Paralegal in Ontario
Paralegals are licensed legal professionals with a defined scope of practice. Here is how to choose one that fits your matter — and what to expect at your first consultation.
Why hire an Ontario paralegal?
Licensed Paralegals in Ontario are regulated by the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) and are authorized to provide legal services in specific areas — most notably the Landlord and Tenant Board, Small Claims Court (up to $50,000), and Provincial Offences. For these matters, an experienced paralegal often delivers comparable outcomes to a lawyer at a significantly lower cost.
What to verify before retaining a paralegal
- LSO licence in good standing. Search the public Law Society directory before you sign anything.
- Focus area. A generalist who occasionally appears at the LTB is not the same as a paralegal who is in front of the Board every week.
- Conflicts. A landlord-side practice should never also represent tenants in the same jurisdiction. Conflict-free representation is a feature, not a footnote.
- Fee structure. Hourly rates, flat fees per stage, and disbursements should be explained in writing.
What a good first consultation looks like
A productive initial meeting answers three questions: what is the legal problem, what realistic outcomes are available, and what is the next concrete step. You should leave with a written summary, a fee estimate, and a timeline.
